Kaula means the binding cord — the invisible thread that connects us to our ancestors, our stories, and the places we call home. At Kaula Luau, that thread comes alive through music, movement, and the timeless traditions of the Pacific.
A Journey Across Generations
At the heart of Kaula is a story shared between kupuna (grandmother) and her granddaughter. Together, they embark on a voyage of discovery — traversing oceans and generations to uncover their family’s genealogy from Tahiti, Samoa, and Hawaii. This isn’t just a performance; it’s a celebration of who we are and where we come from, told through the eyes of those who carry these stories in their hearts.
Guided by kupuna’s wisdom, the young wahine’s journey unfolds in mele (song), oli (chant), and hula — each movement and lyric anchoring her to place, ancestry, and identity. Through this shared experience, the audience is reminded that our own kaula stretches across time, bound by memory, practice, and aloha.
This experience honors the traditional elements of a luau — the feast, the hospitality, the mele and hula — while situating them within a meaningful cultural narrative that speaks to continuity, identity, and place.
